BRICS Consensus and Dialogue Key to Addressing West Asia Crisis, Say Sources
New Delhi: India, which currently holds the BRICS chairship, has emphasized that consensus, dialogue and diplomacy remain at the heart of the grouping’s approach as member nations discuss the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
Official sources said the BRICS framework operates on the principle of consensus, with India actively engaging all member countries to build common ground ahead of the upcoming summit.
“BRICS is based on consensus. As chair, our focus is on engagement and dialogue with all members,” a source said, noting that the 11-member grouping brings together diverse perspectives and experiences.
Discussions Continue on West Asia
On the evolving situation in West Asia and the possibility of a joint BRICS statement, sources said discussions are continuing through the Sherpa channel. India is working with member countries to arrive at mutually acceptable language for the summit outcome document.
India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving conflicts. The country is also seeking to ensure that concerns related to the protection of civilians and the free and unhindered movement through waterways are reflected in the discussions.
“Members have emphasized the need for an early resolution of the crisis, protection of civilians and unimpeded movement through waterways. Our effort is to continue dialogue and find common ground,” the source said.
Focus on Practical Trade and Payment Mechanisms
BRICS members are also continuing discussions on payment mechanisms and expanding trade in national currencies. According to sources, the objective is to develop practical systems that can reduce transaction costs and improve trade efficiency.
The discussions, officials stressed, are not aimed at any particular country. Technical-level consultations are continuing under the BRICS finance track, with further developments expected to be discussed at the finance ministers’ meeting scheduled for early September.
New Development Bank Highlights BRICS Cooperation
The New Development Bank (NDB) was described as a concrete example of what BRICS cooperation can achieve. India, which is set to assume the next chairmanship of the bank, is expected to work towards advancing the development aspirations of its members.
India has also highlighted the importance of creating more balanced trade relations among BRICS countries.
People-Centric Approach Under India’s Chairship
On the broader political and development agenda, sources said India has focused on consolidating initiatives that support developing economies while introducing new, people-centric programmes.
The guiding principle of India’s BRICS chairship has been to promote development-oriented outcomes that directly benefit communities.
Officials said the government has adopted a whole-of-nation approach, with ministries establishing dedicated BRICS units. India has also shared its experience and expertise in areas such as digital payments through UPI and digital health with partner countries.
Strong Interest in Upcoming Summit
India has invited 10 BRICS partner countries to participate in the upcoming summit and has received what sources described as an encouraging response, indicating strong international interest.
Regarding Saudi Arabia, sources said Riyadh was invited to join BRICS and continues to engage with the grouping. Saudi Arabia has also received an invitation to attend the summit.
BRICS Expansion to Be Guided by Consensus
On the question of further expansion, sources noted that BRICS has already undergone significant growth, expanding from five to 11 full members and adding 10 partner countries.
The current focus, according to officials, is on consolidation. Any future decisions regarding expansion will follow agreed procedures and will be guided by the principle of consensus.
India Examining Impact of US Sanctions and Tariffs
On the impact of US sanctions and tariffs, sources said India is examining the possible implications. They added that BRICS has already outlined its broader position on such issues in previous declarations.
As India prepares to host the BRICS summit, New Delhi’s central message remains focused on strengthening cooperation among developing economies through dialogue, diplomacy, consensus and people-centred development.
With discussions continuing among the diverse member countries, India is working to build common ground on key global challenges, particularly the continuing crisis in West Asia.
