Moscow (Russia): The Russian-African Raw Materials Dialogue has commenced at the Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University, focusing on enhancing cooperation between Russia and African nations in mining and engineering education. The event is being held under the theme “Development Path: Raw Materials and Personnel as the Basis of Economic Sovereignty.”
According to TV BRICS, the forum seeks to develop coordinated strategies to support the growth of African economies by leveraging Russia’s experience in resource management and technical education. Delegates will discuss practical steps to deepen collaboration in mineral extraction and expand training programs for engineering professionals.
Representatives from 32 African Union member states are taking part in the dialogue, including eight sectoral ministers, 17 ambassadors and charges d’affaires, along with leaders from industrial corporations and top universities. The Russian side includes members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, experts from the Mining University, officials from leading resource companies, and government representatives.
Organised by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Competence Centre for Mining Engineering Education under UNESCO, the programme builds on commitments made during the Second Russia-Africa Summit in 2023. The initiative highlights both regions’ shared objective of promoting economic self-reliance through technological expertise, knowledge exchange, and sustainable resource development.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously highlighted Africa’s potential, noting that BRICS aims to expand cooperation within the continent’s rapidly developing markets. With Africa holding approximately 30% of global mineral reserves — including 40% of the world’s gold and up to 90% of its platinum — the partnership is seen as strategically valuable for both sides.
Officials also noted that trade between Russia and African countries has grown by more than 60% over the past five years, accompanied by closer political ties.
The two-day dialogue is expected to lay the groundwork for new long-term partnerships focused on mining, engineering education, and sustainable economic growth.
